Be a Liberal Arts Citizen

Global Perspective

The virtues of citizenship are being redefined in an increasingly global society. Developing global perspective is a lifelong endeavor that begins with understanding your place in the larger world and the complexity and connectedness of our global community.

Initiative

Strong communities are built on a foundation of motivated citizens. You exercise initiative by making intentional decisions, advocating for yourself, leveraging available resources, and asking for help when you need it.

Leadership

Our society needs responsible citizen leadership. As a student leader in the Liberal Arts, you balance power and ability with empathy and nuance. You take on challenges to improve yourself and the circumstances of others; you inspire others through your actions and hold yourself to the highest standards.

Engagement

The heart of a productive community, workforce, or academic institution is an attentive and participatory citizenry. You demonstrate engagement by getting involved, speaking up, and building connections with your peers and mentors.

Why Earn Badges?

Liberal Arts Citizens perceive globally, lead ethically, take initiative, and engage their communities in meaningful ways. The Liberal Arts Citizen badging program is designed to encourage and recognize the actions that demonstrate these values and skills in our Liberal Arts students. Badges in four categories - global perspective, leadership, initiative, and engagement - will help you navigate the opportunities available in the College of the Liberal Arts.

The Citizen badges can be incorporated into resumes, e-portfolios, or professional online profiles to demonstrate your achievements within the Liberal Arts community at Penn State and your potential to add value to whatever communities come next.

To become a Liberal Arts Citizen and be awarded the Citizenship meta badge, earn one badge in each category and six badges total.
